BR-Rio de Janeiro Urban Age Conference
Organised by LSE Cities at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Deutsche Bank’s Alfred Herrhausen Society, the 2013 Urban Age conference will investigate the impact of large scale urban development projects on the social, economic, political and physical make-up of cities.
The conference will be held in the Olympic City of Rio de Janeiro in October 2013 and will act as a platform for exchange and debate amongst over 150 policy-makers, academics, urban designers, architects, representatives of NGOs and local community groups.
Speakers from global cities and local representatives from Rio de Janeiro will exchange experiences on the design, management and delivery of a number of significant projects that are having a positive impact on the transformation of the cities they inhabit.
Prof. Markus Neppl will speak about two urban design projects by ASTOC Architects and Planners. One example is Hamburg's "Harbour City", currently the largest inner-city urban design project in Europe. Another notable project by ASTOC Architects and Planners is the urban redesign of the Mooca - Vila Carioca district of São Paulo, Brazil. The quarter, which has a total area of about 1,650 hectare, was established around a century ago as one of the first major industrial and working-class residential districts in the centre of São Paulo.
